Nous, by Eliyahu Tolochinski. Last updated 9 October 2026.
The short version
Nous has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. Your progress stays on your device. The only time anything leaves your device is when you choose to talk with a philosopher in the Symposium, and the game asks your permission before the first time.
What stays on your device
Your progress in each chapter, the views you give, your settings and your notes are stored only on your device, inside the app. We never receive them. Deleting the app deletes them; you can also clear them from Settings.
The Symposium
In the Symposium you can talk with an AI that speaks as a historical philosopher. When you send a message:
- the text you typed and the recent lines of that conversation are sent to our server (hosted by Supabase), and from there to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the philosopher's reply;
- a random number the app made for your device (not your name, not an advertising identifier) and your network (IP) address are used to count how many replies are sent each day, so that no one can overload the service.
We do not store the content of your conversations. The daily counts (the random device number or network address, the date and a number) are deleted after 30 days. Anthropic processes the messages to produce replies under its commercial terms and does not use them to train its models.
The game asks before you first use the Symposium. You can say no and play everything else; you can change your answer in Settings.
Please do not type personal information into the Symposium. The replies are written by an AI and may contain mistakes.
Children
Nous does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The Symposium sends only what is typed into it, as described above.
